SUPER FRUITS!
Super Fruits!
By: Sydney Flower 8F
Super fruits are not your average fruits. They are a variety of fruit that offers a complex selection of nutrients that you can’t get on a daily basis. In this article, you will learn where to find super fruits, the best way to eat them, and 7 fruits you may not have known were super, or that you may not have even known existed, because there’s a lot of those.

Many of these fruits are found in exotic places around the world, and are often not available as a fresh fruit, but as a powdered concentrate or a dried version. A perfect example of this would be the acai berry, which is grown in tropical areas of Central and South America. Some, however, like the cranberry, can be grown at home in many different climate zones around the world.

Super fruits contain a condensed source of energizing ingredients, and many can be blended into smoothies, while some are delicious all on their own, consumed as a dried fruit or fresh when available.

Super fruits have been developed mainly as juices, but recently began to appear in stores as single piece products or as ingredients for sweets, useful foods and cosmetics. Current business development includes applications for creating new consumer products, like energy drinks, dietary extras, and flavours with nutrient qualities, such as flavoured water, popcorn or chips.

Although being used in new food and drink products, super fruits continue to be undefined by scientific standards that would allow consumers to objectively assess nutrient value and potential for providing health benefits.

So, the term ‘super fruit’ is used generously to include fruits having little scientific evidence for being ‘super’ other than being relatively unknown to common consumers.
Summing this all up, the name ‘super fruit’ is fairly self- explanatory. The name was given to a group of fruits that are considered to be especially good for health and well-being. Below are 7 examples of super fruits that you can incorporate into your daily meals! Let’s start with the blueberry.
Blueberries
Blueberries should be your go-to super fruit for brain function and memory. Regular consumption may help keep your brain functioning well as you age, and several studies link high flavonoid levels in blueberries with a better memory. So basically what I’m saying is that you should be able to tell me what you had for breakfast for the past year, if you’ve been eating blueberries. Just kidding. But seriously.
Cranberries
These little tart berries are super fruits, but especially for women. They can prevent urinary-tract infections, and an even scarier disease: ovarian cancer. According to a new Rutgers University study, cranberries can boost the efficiency of chemotherapy rugs used to fight ovarian cancer. They’re two types of super- super bitter and just super in general. These are super (get it) in smoothies too!
Dragon Fruit
The name and the vibrant pink colour of this fruits skin tell you that it’s something special, though the taste is quite mild. Researchers from Malaysia’s University Putra analyzed the seeds and found there to be plenty of essential fatty acids, which we need but can’t be made by our body. Though grown mainly in Asia, you might be able to find one at your local Chinatown or farmer’s market. Careful though, they’re pretty spiky so don’t cut yourself!
Grapefruit
Grapefruits are more of a benefit for your heart than for your weight. One grapefruit a day, mainly the ruby variety, can help reduce heart disease by lowering cholesterol. The redder your grapefruit, the better. Redder grapefruits contain higher levels of antioxidants, and they’re prettier! Although the membrane that surrounds the actual part you eat is quite bitter, the fruit inside is really sweet and really yummy.
Papaya
Having a cold in the summer is the worst, so eat some papaya! This tropical-growing fruit is bursting at the seams with vitamin C. Just one cup gives you more than you need each day. Also, papayas also contain good amounts of vitamins A and E, which both may help protect against colon cancer and heart disease.

Pumpkin
I know what you’re thinking, and yes, a pumpkin is a fruit. Pumpkins are overflowing with beta-carotene, that when combined with potassium can help prevent high blood pressure. If making a pumpkin pie is too hard or you’re just too lazy, try putting the seeds in soups or salads, or even just toasting them on their own with spices.
Tomato
Once again, I know what you’re thinking (I think I’m a physic?!), and yes, tomatoes are also fruits. Tomatoes are full of a popular antioxidant called lycopene, which rarely is found in other super fruits. They’re also high in vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and are super low in calories.
So, that’s it for our list of super fruits. Your brain should be fully equipped with the latest super fruit knowledge. Or, well, I hope it is, I tried my best. Try incorporating at least one of these 7 fruits into your daily diet, and you’re all set to have a nice, healthy, long life. Go get in your car and drive to the grocery store. Now. I’m serious. Go!
